Abstract

Unlike in Western cultures, where meeting others' expectations is considered incompatible with individual agency, social expectations tend to be internalized and congruent with the self in Eastern cultures, where meeting others' expectations has been shown to promote effort and satisfaction. However, considering cross‐cultural differences in mind‐reading, research has yet to clarify whether directly expressing social expectation has the same effects as inferring social expectation from others' messages. With the aim of disentangling the effects of expressed and inferred social expectation on prosocial behavior, two online studies employing teamwork scenarios, in which participants (donors) had the opportunity to help other people (targets) by putting effort into a common task (prosocial effort), were conducted in Japan and the United States. The strength of expressed social expectation was manipulated within subjects in Study 1 (N = 439) and between subjects in Study 2 (N = 560). The effect of expressed social expectation did not differ by culture, but inferred social expectation positively predicted prosocial effort only in Japan. The findings hint at the importance of mind‐reading and subjective perceptions of others' needs in Japan.

While the negative impact of the pandemic on students' mental health has been studied around the world, very little is known about the mental health of faculty and staff. This research aims to examine mental health among Japanese faculty members who taught online courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. We recruited 537 university faculty members and assessed their mental health using the World Health Organization-Five Well-Being Index (WHO-5), both retrospectively (during the academic year before the onset of the pandemic) and during the pandemic. We also evaluated workload (number of online lectures taught and preparation time per class), difficulty in using information technology (IT) for online classes, and satisfaction with the university support service for online education. As a result, the WHO-5 score during the COVID-19 pandemic was significantly lower than before, and 33.5% of the faculty members were recognized as being at risk for mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. A binomial logistic regression analysis revealed two significant risk factors for mental illness-faculty members were more at risk for mental illness when they experienced difficulty in using IT for online classes, and were unsatisfied with the administrative support for online education. The deterioration of mental health during the COVID-19 was not predicted by workload, such as the number of online lectures and preparation time. These results suggest the importance of improving workplace support services, especially IT support, to prevent mental health deterioration among faculty teaching online.

Compared to European Americans, East Asians are more reluctant to seek social support when dealing with stressful events. The purpose of this study is to test three possible explanations of these cultural differences. In addition to examining both harmony seeking and rejection avoidance (two facets of interdependence reflecting relationship concerns) as possible explanations, we propose a novel explanation, namely that sense of contribution (i.e., the degree to which one contributes to other people’s well-being) may be an important mediator for explaining cultural differences in support seeking. A survey was conducted on adults living in Japan and the U.S. Results revealed that Japanese less often rely on social support, and sense of contribution significantly mediates the association between culture and support seeking. In contrast, the mediating role of both harmony seeking and rejection avoidance was not supported. The results indicate that cultural differences in support seeking may be more adequately accounted for by sense of contribution than relationship concerns.

In recent years, crowdsourcing has grown in popularity in Japan. However, little is knownregarding the motivation of Japanese crowd workers. In a preregistered study, we examinedthe impact of intrinsic and prosocial motivation on work engagement and objective workoutcomes among Japanese crowd workers. Data on several work-related outcomes wascollected through a self-report questionnaire on Lancers, the oldest Japanese crowdsourcingplatform. The performance and persistence of the participants was measured throughobjective indicators one month, as well as one year after data collection. Findings from asample of 357 participants revealed that both intrinsic and prosocial motivation positivelyinfluenced crowdsourcing work engagement, although they did not affect work accuracy (i.e.,response compliance). Prosocial motivation also predicted extra-role behaviour (i.e.,responding to optional open-ended questions) and extra-role effort (i.e., the length ofresponses to optional questions). However, prosocial motivation had a negative associationwith productivity and persistence, with participants high in prosocial motivation completingfewer micro-tasks per month/year and being less likely to maintain an active crowdsourcingaccount one year later. This study contributes to the literature on crowdsourcing workengagement revealing how intrinsic and prosocial motivation differently shape workoutcomes among Japanese crowdsourcing workers
