    Abstract

    Meta-analysis is widely used to integrate results from multiple experiments to obtain generalized insights. Since meta-analysis datasets are often heteroscedastic due to varying subgroups and temporal heterogeneity arising from experiments conducted at different time points, the typical meta-analysis approach, which assumes homoscedasticity, fails to adequately address this heteroscedasticity among experiments. This paper proposes a new Bayesian estimation method that simultaneously shrinks estimates of the means and variances of experiments using a hierarchical Bayesian approach while accounting for time effects through a Gaussian process. This method connects experiments via the hierarchical framework, enabling “borrowing strength” between experiments to achieve high-precision estimates of each experiment’s mean. The method can flexibly capture potential time trends in datasets by modeling time effects with the Gaussian process. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method through simulation studies and illustrate its practical utility using a real marketing promotions dataset.

    This study aims to investigate how different incentive sizes in multi-shot lottery promotions, including large and small prizes, influence subsequent consumer payments. Multi-shot lottery promotions allow repeated opportunities to win incentives and are widely used across various industries. Understanding the relationship between the cost of implementing the promotions, such as incentives for winning, and subsequent consumer payments, which drive revenue, is essential for improving cost-effectiveness. This study analyzes large-scale field data from over one million mobile payment service users and employs a stratified randomized experiment method that addresses user-initiated transaction bias. The results show that, during the promotion, winning any prize increases the total transaction amount (by $26.97–$32.80), the number of transactions (by 1.17–1.27), and the average transaction amount (by $8.81–$9.38). Notably, a small prize with a 0.2% return rate yields a return on investment of 1078.8%, surpassing the 5.6% and 8.6% from larger prizes. However, after the promotion, these differences in incentive size have negligible effects on consumer payments. Further analysis, which also examined whether the effects of winning vary depending on users’ frequency of use, reveals that these effects are most pronounced among light users across all outcomes. The findings suggest that allocating multiple small prizes may be more cost-effective than focusing on a few large prizes, especially for lower-usage segments, and offer valuable insights for designing successful multi-shot lottery promotions.

    In a disaster situation, local and municipal governments need to distribute relief supplies and provide administrative support to evacuees.Although people are supposed to evacuate to evacuation shelters designated by local governments, some people take refuge at non-designated facilities, called non-designated evacuation shelters , due to unavoidable circumstances such as damage on the access routes to designated evacuation shelters. Upon occurrence of a disaster, therefore, it is necessary for the local governments to quickly find the locations of non-designated evacuation shelters. In this article, we propose a method to detect non-designated evacuation shelters based on autoencoder (AE)-based anomaly detection using real-time population dynamics generated from operation data of cellular phone networks. We assume that reconstruction errors of an AE model include both the errors due to characteristic differences between locations and the errors due to anomalies in population dynamics. Thus, we propose to use the ratio of the reconstruction error before and after the earthquake to determine the threshold of anomaly detection. We evaluate the performance of the proposed method on data from three actual earthquakes in Japan. The evaluation results show that our reconstruction error based approach can achieve better accuracy for the actual disaster data compared to a baseline method that exploits statistical anomaly detection.

    Because national science and technology policy decisions can be made based on the impact of each technology, quantifying the impact on research is an important task. Citation counts and impact factors can be used to measure the impact of individual studies. What would have happened without the research, however, is fundamentally a counterfactual phenomenon. Thus, we propose a causal inference approach to quantify the research impact of a specific technical topic. We leverage difference-in-difference to quantify the research impact by applying to bibliometric data. Evaluation results show that deep learning significantly affects computer vision and natural language processing. Besides, deep learning significantly affects cross-field citation especially for speech recognition to computer vision and natural language processing to computer vision.

    近年わが国ではスマートフォンの普及が進んでおり,スマートフォンを用いたヘルスケア技術に期待が高まってきている.スマートフォンはユーザが日々持ち歩き,使われるものであるため,ユーザの心理状態を反映することが期待できる.本研究では,ユーザのスマートフォン利用や持ち歩きによって収集されるログデータについて,時間的観点,空間的観点の両観点からログを分析し,利用者のストレスを推定する手法を提案する.その結果,21人のユーザにおいて,推定精度88.7%で利用者のストレスの高低度合いを推定可能であり,時間だけでなく空間的観点でログを集計することが有効であることを確認した.
    With the spread of smartphones worldwide, there have been growing interests in healthcare using smartphones recently. Smartphones are expected to understand psychological context of those owners because they are usually with owners. In this study, we propose a method to estimate human stress using usage and sensor logs in a smartphone with consideration of spatiotemporal context. To extract spatial contexts of users, the proposed method presents an algorithm of stay detection in most important points that play the role of home and workplace. Our evaluation revealed that the proposed spatial features were effective to extract important contexts related to human stress and successfully combined with the chronological features to improve stress estimation with up to 88.7% accuracy.

    Predicting user location is one of the most important topics in data mining. Although human mobility is reasonably predictable for frequently visited places, novel location prediction is much more difficult. However, location-based services (LBSs) can influence users' choice of destination and can be exploited to more accurately predict user location even for new locations. In this study, we assessed the behavior difference for specific LBS users and non-users by using large-scale check-in data. We found a remarkable difference between specific LBS users and non-users (e.g., check-in locations) that had previously not been revealed. Then, we proposed a location prediction method exploiting the characteristics of check-in locations and analyzed how specific LBS usage influences location predictability. We assumed that users who use the same LBS tend to visit similar locations. The results showed that the novel location predictability of specific LBS users is up to 43.9% higher than that of non-users.
