黄金期探偵小説における男性性表象

本研究の主眼は、黄金期の探偵小説を牽引してきたDorothy L. Sayers、Margery Allingham、Ngaio Marsh、Agatha Christieといった女性作家の作品における男性性表象を男性学の見地から分析することである。初年度となる本年はセイヤーズの作品に焦点を当て、研究を行なった。多岐にわたるセイヤーズの作品を網羅的に読破したことにより、セイヤーズの探偵Lord Peter Wimseyが、第一次世界大戦におけるトラウマ的経験による男性性不安と向き合わざるを得ない探偵であり、社会的に男性性が期待されてきた探偵像と自らのギャップに苦しんでいる男性／探偵であることが明らかとなった。この点は他の作家の男性探偵たちとは大きく異なる点であり、セイヤーズの男性ジェンダーに対する深い洞察を証明するものである。この点が色濃く表われているのがセイヤーズの第5作Strong Poisonであり、本研究の研究対象は最終的にこの作品に絞られた。作品分析に加えて、先行研究の動向の確認を行なった。この結果、セイヤーズ作品を男性学の見地から分析することの批評的意義とこの分野における本研究の貢献度の高さを確信できた。先行研究は一様にウィムジーを男性性を発揮することのできない「女性化」された存在として評価することで、ジェンダーの規範的二項対立を突き崩そうと試みるが、男性性を発揮できない男性を「女性化」された存在と定義すること自体がジェンダーの規範的二項対立を暗黙の前提としてしまう恐れがある。また、男性自身が規範的ジェンダーイデオロギーによる抑圧の中でいかにして生きているのかという問題から目を逸らすことになってしまいかねない。本研究は探偵ウィムジーの男性として生きていかざるを得ないからこそ生まれる苦悩に目を向ける点で探偵小説研究においてオリジナリティのあるものとなっている。
