Each presentation introduces Boje (2008)'s theory and methodology of Storytelling Organizations (SO) and based on that, discusses critically Japanese Organizational Discourse Studies (ODS) and Critical Management Studies (CMS). The first presentation is on the acceptance of ODS in Japan, including narratives. The second one is on the theoretical part of the SO. The third one is on the strategy part of the SO. The fourth one is on the organizational development part of SO. Finally, the fifth one is on the effectiveness and limitations of the theory of SO and discusses the trajectory of Boje after SO.

The purpose of this paper is to undertake an in-depth examination of the building and collapse, as well as the subsequent rebuilding of a place brand using the case of Okinawa Prefecture and its health food industry.
We review place brand studies, clarify their characteristics, and explain their special nature. Furthermore, we described the activities for justifiably acquiring a place brand and the loss of that justification, and rebuilding the brand by implementing various policies as alternatives. We use the discourse analysis (Grand et al., 2004) to analyse the brand evolution using industry annual reports, various data from the Okinawa Prefectural Government (OPG) and interviews with representatives of the OPG. This paper shows that we must examine the place brand, where place dependence is high and possibility for relocation is low, from a new perspective. Simultaneously, we have shown that maintaining and repairing a place brand, in the face of collapse, can have practical implications as well.

This study examines the conversations and actions of the operators and managers of the Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) on March 11, 2011, when Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant (1F) suffered a “severe accident” due to the Great East Japan Earthquake and the subsequent tsunami. Using the archives from TEPCO’s videoconference system, we conducted a network and content analysis of discussions and steps that were taken on the cutting edge of organizational crises. Staff members at the various sites (1F operators and managers, as well as employees at Headquarters and the Offsite Center) used different vocabulary, which meant they could not build a shared organizational reality of the ongoing crisis.

Due to the catastrophe that occurred at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, and the accompanying tsunami, the "myth of nuclear power safety" collapsed. After a year Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) has released archives recorded on the videoconference system and now we can know "what was going on" at that time. Using these archives, we conduct the network analysis, text-mining and discourse analysis regarding what kind of discourses and actions were made on the cutting-edge of organizational crisis. There are the differences of usage of the words among the locations (Fukushima Daiichi, Head Quarters, Offsite Center), that means they could not share and/or construct the organizational reality about the ongoing crisis.

In recent years, research on storytelling has developed in organization studies, particularly on how storytelling is used in organization change. However, storytelling in the organization is not merely an innovation tool. Instead, there are various stories withinthe organization, and the reality of the organization occurs from that. Therefore, in this paper, we explain storytelling in the organization from a viewpoint different from that of established studies.

• High Reliability Organization Revisited : Actions become possible using "HRO" Reviewed

In the field of safety research, the current area of focus for both academics and practitioners is the concept of a "High Reliability Organization" (HRO). It is a safety protocol to prevent accidents and enable rapid response in the event of unexpected incidents. However, an explanation of practice using HRO is insufficient by itself. Initially, research on an HRO involved a detailed analysis of the operations of an organization with low errors. Although, since HRO has changed into a powerful consulting and marketing label (e.g., Bourrier, 2011), appropriately introducing its essence offers better reliability and does not focus on its practice. Therefore, this paper clarifies the features of HRO research followed by a discussion on its limitations and theoretical pitfalls. However, describing these reasons for an HRO is irrelevant and we should instead focus on the implications and practice of the term. Finally, we analyze the use of HRO by companies and researchers to clarify the possibility in HRO research based on the practice based view.

We point out the dark side of Japanese corporate systems, by means of the concept of 'Evil Corporation'. It is described in Japanese media as a company that exhibits coercive power relationship with employees by exploiting their feelings of loyalty. Employees are physically and psychologically (e.g., long overtime-work without pay) suffering from internal selection process.
An example of Evil Corporation is illustrated showing that the rhetoric of 'family' is used as a means to exploit its employees. By means of Evil Corporation,we problematize Japanese ways of governance drawing on a logic of 'IE'.

Due to the catastrophe that occurred at the Fukushima No. 1 Nuclear Power Plant as a result of the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11, 2011, and the accompanying tsunami, the "myth of nuclear power safety" collapsed. By self-spellbind in the rhetoric of this myth, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) could not to take effective measures to respond as a high reliability organization, and; meltdowns occurred.
In this presentation, via network analysis and discourse analysis of the television conferences that TEPCO has released to the public, considerations are made regarding what kind of discourse and actions were made on the cutting-edge of this collapse of the myth of safety.

A purpose of this session is to describe about relations with storytelling and organizational reality. The research of storytelling in the organization has attracted attention over the years. The study is performed how storytelling is used in particular in an organization change, but it does not remain in only the tool of the change. Rather, there are various stories at the organization and the reality of the organization occurs from that. Therefore, we consider storytelling of the organization from an alternative viewpoint different from dominant research.

This study has examined how place brands are formed and how they develop and change, based on the following two questions: (1) How have the related parties of businesses and local governments attached significance and assigned value to resources for which the value of their presence in the community had not been identified previously? (2) How do the meanings attached to place brands change? In FY2016, theoretical developments and research currents were reviewed and topics were elucidated such as differences in strategic attachment of significance between cases in Japan and overseas. In FY2017, the case study of the longevity phenomenon in Okinawa Prefecture was investigated, and since FY2018 the study has analyzed transformations in this case, using discourse analysis and knowledge of SaP.

What is necessary for companies to pursue safety and security and become a reliable organization? We argue it from the viewpoint of High Reliability Organization (HRO). We translated the book “Managing the Unexpected 3rd ed.”, which is written by Weick and Sutcliffe, representative researchers in the field. The academic impacts of this research are (1) to present the concept of "High Reliability Organizing" which is related to safety and security, (2) to discuss new perspectives in organization theory, such as social constructionism, institutional theory, practice theory, and discourse theory. The social impacts are (1) to show the applicability of the concept of HRO to a wide range of organizations such as educational institutions and self-supporting organizations, not to mention Japanese companies, which strongly require safety and security, (2) to clarify the importance of an organizational perspective in cyber security.

Due to the Great East-Japan Earthquake and the accident at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, the existence of the trans-science problem, “the answers to questions which can be asked of science and yet which cannot be answered by science,” was strongly conscious. In the contemporary society supported by Big Science including nuclear power generation business, the cooperation of social consensus by experts and citizens is necessary to solve such problems. Nonetheless, in actually, it is difficult to realize this cooperation.
In this research project, we have been studying the responsibility in Business Admin-istration to the construction of “new cooperation between experts and citizens.” The specific results were presented as literature reviews, conference presentations, and journal papers by this research members.

In this research project, we examined the relationship between professions and citizens in nuclear electric power companies and their environment. The accident of Fukushima No. 1 nuclear electric power plants is caused by the result of “the fragile cooperation” with professions who constructed a privileged position using their technical terms and citizens who entitled benefit by acceptance without considerations of the technical terms because of the difficulty for understanding it.
As a result of our research project, the following points are proposed; (a) the modern society is constructed by highly differentiated and specialized societies, (b) because the discourse of professions are based on their sciences, they do not necessarily contribute citizens’“peace of mind,” and (c) there are “trans-scientific questions,” that is, the answers to questions which can be asked of science and yet which cannot be answered by science in risk societies.

This study considers "nuclear power generation corporation" re-garded as a model of public interest-oriented management(business management). The nuclear power generation corporation enters upon the era of "Deregulation of Retail Elec-tricity Sales" and embodies conflict between the pursuit of private interest-oriented(economy) and public interest-oriented. We studied such a corporate social responsibility and public interest-oriented management from a philosophical, theoretical and empirical point of view. As a result, we concluded that there is a gap in the consciousness of "the se-curity/relief" between an organization and society. We considered what such a gap brought. The following materials considered the consequences of such a gap.
