    Since the 1960s, researchers have widely used single-case experimental designs (SCEDs) as a standard method in applied behavior analysis, but this research method has rarely attracted the attention of scholars in other research fields. Recent years, however, have seen an increased interest in SCEDs in various research fields, including clinical psychology and developmental psychology, partly because of the demand for evidence-based practice. Therefore, this article provides a basic description of SCEDs and explains their fundamental properties as well as the characteristics and problems encountered in typical SCEDs often implemented in applied research. In addition, this study will explain the visual inspection and statistical methods for examining data obtained from SCEDs. It will also describe the standards for evaluating the quality of single-case experimental design studies, especially the criteria to satisfy “Meets WWC SCD Standards without Reservations” proposed by WWC standards version 4.1.

    This paper discusses issues related to the contribution of statistical synthesis of research findings, such as meta-analysis and synthesizing a number of existing meta-analysis results by means of the same procedure as meta-analysis (i.e., super-synthesis), which could play a dual role of disciplined inquiry for education in understanding the chosen phenomenon and conceptualizing theories, and providing information wanted by decision-makers. We describe the brief history that Japanese educational psychologists have accepted meta-analysis and its recent research trends, and indicate the significance that the statistical synthesis of research findings could have. Specifically, it has affected attitudes to drawing conclusions from the accumulated literature through considering primary research as an individual sample. It is also pointed out that the widespread adoption of statistical research synthesis might have led both researchers and decision-makers to an overly simplistic view, which focuses only on the effect size and has encouraged the rough use of research findings, with the background of a growing debate on promoting evidence-based education. We then discuss the following: The statistical synthesis of research findings makes reasonable contributions to understanding phenomena and establishing theories. However, meta-analysis based on individual data is required to draw causal inferences, and in order to do so, it will be necessary to promote open science. Also, there will be some potential risks that statistical research synthesis can narrow classroom practitioners' choices, and therefore weaken their autonomy, because it can be considered as the high-level of evidence and its results tend to be presented in terms of simple indices such as mean effect size. Throughout this discussion, the following conclusions are drawn. For understanding phenomena and establishing theories, the statistical synthesis of research findings can be an effective methodology to improve the external validity of the existing research literature, and evaluate the relevance or validity of psychological constructs. Thereby, it is supposed to improve the accuracy and certainty of theories of educational psychology. These findings can provide information on "what works" and clear guiding principles that decision-makers demand. The issues pointed out in this discussion call into question the impact of educational psychological research findings on areas outside of their discipline, as well as some problems related to the statistical research synthesis. Finally, we argue that in order to promote both roles of disciplined inquiry for education with statistical research syntheses, educational psychologists and experts from other fields should be conscious of the need for communicating warranted findings with each other.

    Different statistical methods are used to evaluate single-case research data (SCRD). This paper explains
    the effect size indices developed for analyzing SCRD. Moreover, we have introduced meta-analysis, a statistical synthesis method of analyzing multiple single-case studies using effect sizes. We have also described a meta-analysis of single-case research using multilevel modeling and the application of Bayesian
    statistical modeling to single-case data.

    Character education in the US aims to establish good habits corresponding to good character. The purpose of this study was to determine the structure of character strengths and the relations among these strengths and wellbeing in Japanese children and youth. Peterson and Seligman (2004) developed a classification of character strengths called VIA-IS. We thought, however, that VIA-IS had too many items to use with school children. We selected 15 categories and developed a questionnaire for Japanese children and youth. Fourth to eighth grade students (N = 1,351) answered questionnaires in Study 1. We found four categories of character strengths, each of which consisted of 25 items: perseverance-honesty, courage-ideas, compassion-gratitude, and fairness-care. These categories were very similar to previous research findings which simplified the categories. In Study 2, we found a positive relationship among four categories of character strengths and well-being, which we called the hope scale, life satisfaction scale, subjective happiness scale, and social support scale. We discussed what additional research was needed for establishing good habits using our categories with children and youth in schools.

    In this study, Graded Response Model(GRM) and 2 Parameter Logistic Model(2PLM) were examined to analyze the actual test data that did not satisfy the local independence assumption. And the estimates of item parameters, ability parameters, and test infomation curve obtained from these 2 models were compared. Q3(Yen, 1984) was used to assess the extent of local dependence. From the results of 2PLM, extremely large values of discrimination parameter estimates were obtained from items that had local dependence. Such a extremely values may influence the ability estimates or test information. About estimate of ability parameters, it was indicated that subjects having the same estimated ability parameter on 2PLM may have about±1vary estimated ability parameter on GRM.

    The purpose of this paper is to report our site visits of the character education.facilities and schools in St. Louis, MO, USA. In St. Louis, there are two main facilities which lead character education locally and globally. They are CHARACTERplus and Center for Character & Citizenship, which have been helping schools to establish good characters in schools and students for a long time. The authors visited these facilities and five public schools which won the National School of Character Prize awarded by the Character Education Partnership. The authors also participated in three seminars of leadership academy. Based on our site visits, the following concepts about character education were found among these schools: school leaders were trying to provide good services that build sustainable relationships throughout cross-age groups, establish cooperative learning and authentic partnerships among students, and integrate all school elements into character education. These schools were trying to provide many learning opportunities for students to behave as good leaders in their schools and communities. It was thought that the school leaders' perseverance efforts to establish sustained and caring relationship with core virtues would be one of comprehensive school reform programs.

    This article reviews studies published in 2012 that concern educational measurement and evaluation. It focuses on the following aspects: (1) effect size, statistical power analysis, and meta-analysis; (2) item response theory; and (3) the Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods. The distinctive feature of 2012 was its significant attention topics in this field that although addressed, have been insufficiently elucidated. These topics include effect size, statistical power analysis, meta-analysis, and item response theory. Thus, 2012 might be a milestone year in this field of research. In addition, this paper also focuses on the open-source R (also known as R), a data analysis and statistics program. Its brief history and the recent trend of using R in educational psychological research and psychological statistics are discussed.

    Nowadays, interest in spatial ability has been increasing in education because it can predict education and professional success. However, in Myanmar, there was no wide awareness of the importance of spatial ability, and there were no typical spatial ability tests. Therefore, in this paper, two new equivalent multiple-task spatial ability tests were developed. These tests were designed as multiple-task spatial ability tests to measure more aspects of spatial ability than single-task tests. To develop the tests, a two-parameter logistic model (2PLM) of item response theory (IRT) was utilized. Consequently, two equivalent tests composed of 40 items were developed.

    The purpose of this study was to identify the factorial structure of perceived condition fluctuation considering a time lag in a single case design applying dynamic factor analysis (DFA). The subject was a female swimmer who had won the 200-m individual medley in the 1998 inter-collegiate competition in Japan. The 15 selected items measured her perceived physical and mental condition ; the amount of training per and her regular lifestyle were recorded by herself on the "Quality Control (QC) Sheet" every day for 167 days, 24 weeks. Common factors of condition fluctuation were extracted from multivariate time-series data using DFA with the maximum likelihood (ML) method and quartimax rotation. The lag-2 variance / covariance was most optimal for DFA according to autocorrelation and partial autocorrelation of all variable. Five factors and the lag-2 DFA model were adopted considering several model-fitting indicators. The factorial structure of condition fluctuation was different in each lag model, although such factors as the amount of practice, meal satisfaction, perceived condition, and fatigue were extracted in all lag models. It was inferred that the factorial structure of perceived condition fluctuation in a female swimmer could be constructed with a time lag consideration. It was expected that changes of factorial structure accompanying time progression could be confirmed by using DFA for multivariate time-series data.

    A study was conducted to analyze fluctuations of physical and mental condition during sports training using a single-case study design and statistical techniques. Two male youth soccer players aged 18 years, one participating in a national high school sports competition(sub.A), and the other in a prefectural high school sports competition(sub.B), independently recorded their physical and mental condition and lifestyle on the new version of the "Quality Control(QC)sheet" every day for 70 days(sub.A)and 120 days(sub.B). The 12 items related to lifestyle, and physical and mental condition were analyzed statistically. Factor analysis with principal component solution and promax rotation was utilized to extract components related to fluctuations in condition. Randomization test and interrupted time series analysis(ITSA)were used to compare means, and the slope of the regression equation between sequential training periods. Five fluctuation factors-evening living time, morning living time, physical condition, physical and mental fatigue-were extracted, and these explained 80% of the total variance for sub.A. For sub.B, five fluctuation factors-morning living time, evening living time, condition, fatigue and body weight-explained 84% of the total variance. Significant differences in means of the factor score for physical condition fluctuation were found between in-and postseason of the national competition for sub.A, and between the 4 sequential training periods for sub.B(P<.05). These results indicate that the physical condition of youth soccer players shows significant individual fluctuations between sequential training periods in the pre-, in-, and post seasons. It was concluded that fluctuations of physical and mental condition can be confirmed statistically using a single-case study design and statistical techniques such as randomization test and interrupted time series analysis(ITSA).

    Single-case research designs are widely used in educational fields. But the analysis of single-case data has been debated for sometime. Recently, the statistical tests are proposed as a supplement to, or a replacement for, visual inspection in evaluating single-case data. Randomization tests and the C statistic are statistically valid methods for analyzing single-case data. These methods are also recommended to use. In this study, the statistical powers of these two statistical tests are estimated for comparison. The Monte Carlo method was used to estimate the power. The power was studied for six standardized effect size (0.0, 0.2, 0.5, 0.8, 1.1, 1.4) and four levels of autocorrelation (1st order autocorrelation coefficients of-0.3, 0.0, 0.3, 0.6). The AB design consisting of 35 observations was studied. The results showed that the C statistic can not control the type l error rate when the data have a positive autocorrelation and has very little power when the data show a negative autocorrelation. Therefore, the C statistic is inappropriate for evaluating single-case data.

    Randomization tests have been proposed as a valid statistical method for analyzing the data from single-case design studies. Randomization tests can be used if the data have a serial dependency. Several researchers have suggested that randormization tests could be applied to various single-case designs. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a variety of randomization methods, including the random assignment of treatments to measurement times, the random assignment of interventions within a measurement sequence, and the random assignment of treatments to phases.

    本研究の目的は,心理統計の授業を担当している教員(主に授業でRを活用している教員)と学生の双方に有益な教材を開発し,その教育効果の検証を行うことである。具体的には,1. 心理統計の授業においてRを活用した事例・教材・Tipsの整理,2. Rに関するWebベースの自習用教材の開発,3. 開発した教材の教育効果の検証,を行う。とりわけ,これまで本研究組織が行ってきた研究と継続性を持つ,2が主たる研究となる。
    令和3年(2021年)度は,令和2年度に引き続いて,本研究組織で開発したRに関するWeb教材改良版(バージョン1)を活用し,教材のコンテンツを充実させることに注力した。本研究におけるWeb教材は,Moodleをベースにしており,Moodleの小テストモジュールと連携ができる「R Codeプラグイン」によりWeb上でRを動かしながら学習できるインタラクティブな教材の開発が可能となっている。学習者はMoodle上でRコードを入力しながら,Rと心理統計について学習することができる。教員は,Moodleの機能により,テスト問題の追加,テストの採点等を行うことができる。
    本研究組織では,前科研費助成事業の成果を発展・進化させ,「心理統計」色を前面に出し,心理学研究に活用出来る教材を鋭意開発している。実際の心理学研究の論文を用いた教材など,オープンエンドな教材の開発に着手している。このため,「R Codeプラグイン」を活用出来る教材と,活用が難しい教材の2タイプの教材ができてきた。本年度はこれらタイプの異なる問題・教材の整備と,翌年度に向けて,教材の教育効果検証の準備を行った。

    一昨年のコロナ禍においていくつかプロジェクトにおいて変更が生じた。プロジェクト1に関しては,兵庫県立加古川東高校において引き続き調査研究が継続できている。入学時と卒業時に資質能力を含むアクティブラーニングや探究の効果検証を行っている。学校生活においてはコロナ禍の影響が大きく反映されており,これまでの調査結果とは違いが出ている。また卒業生へのインタビュー調査も限られた範囲の中ではあるが実施できた。基本,大学に通学できていない時期での調査にならざるを得なかったが,高校と大学との意識の違いは明らかにすることができた。また科研の成果として,高校がこれらのIR調査を自走できるようにシステム開発に着手している。もう1校であった高槻中高等学校においては調査は中止した。プロジェクト2のコドンレターに関するプロジェクトは,同じくこのコロナ禍において残念ながら高校のカリキュラムに余裕がなく,こちらも中断せざるを得ない状況である。遺伝子の単元に関しては,そもそも割愛されている状況である。プロジェクト3の探究に関しては,プロジェクト1同様に,引き続き,徳島県立城北高等学校にて調査を展開することができている。加古川東高等学校に1年遅れて実施している本調査は,2高校共通のベンチマーク的質問内容も含み,高校特有の共通性,また進学校とそうでない高校の違いなど,現在,その特性について分析することを試みている。また今年度は2年分のデータにおいて学会報告がなされた。

    The purpose of this study is to develop the web-based self-learning system for psychological statistics using R.In order to examine the effectiveness of this web-based self-learning system, we examined the usability of the system and investigated whether the impression of psychological statistics and R change after learning with this system.
    From the result of this investigation, we found that students evaluated this web-based self-learning system positively and they changed their image of R positively after learning with this system.

    According to the advancement of knowledge-based society, the role of university is increasing. On the other hand, because competition for university admission is getting milder, it is said that the university entrance examination system cannot maintain the academic standard. They say it is necessary to reform common examination, including linking the scores of different testing occasion. More attention is paid at the basic testing theory such as Item Response Theory. According to the prospect for the common university entrance examinations system in the near future, present study focused on the possible application of IRT for science writing test. The result showed the difficulty in the application of IRT. It is quite hard to overcome the difficulty in keeping necessary number of good items and violation of the basic assumption of the model.

    The purposes of this research were (a) to carry out interviews with university teachers who teach the class of psychological statistics, (b) to develop the teaching materials using R for psychological statistics education. Interviewees were 24 university teachers who taught psychological statistics in the humanities faculties. In the interview, we mainly asked about the class using R, furthermore, about teachers themselves and general topics related to the psychological statistics education. Interview data were analyzed by KJ method and text mining.We found that (a) there were a variety of teaching forms and curriculum, (b) statistical literacy of students were also diverse, and (c) teachers tried to consider about teaching method according to their students. We also began to edit the workbook using R for psychological statistics.

    Nowerdays, Japanese universities are approaching to the free access stage. we are required to measure motivation for learning as well as the academic achievements. The present study recognized that the Japanese education was at the stage of reformation. Especially high school and university education and university admissions are facing drastic change. We started research for the development of measurement for holistic evaluation. In the first year, we analised the cooperative activities of university and high school by serching previous works for domestic activities. In the last year, we analysed effects of the East Japan Earthquake Shock to University Freshman Recruitment on university adomissons by time series analysis model. We presented our research result at an international conference held in the USA. We also visited a leading testing company in the US and gained information on the application of Item Response Teory.

    Character education aims at making good habits for students with core virtue. We can imagine long span education, for example, all over the compulsory education is more effective than just depending upon each classroom teachers. We are sure that cooperating education with parents and community are more effective than just teachers. We would be sure that a core made them cooperate easily. Character education has a possibility to be a core of comprehensive education reform to bring up good citizens. In this research, we discussed it by visiting schools visits which had gotten “National School of Character”. We discussed from four professional points; educational psychology, philosophy and ethics, special education and visual design. We also examined the effects of character education for six years. We found that we could see effective results after we had continued for five or six years’ education. That means we need to have grate perseverance to establish good habits for students.

    Our method visualizes in detail improvements in the grades of individual children (where such improvements are not obvious in the field of education), making it possible to provide evident feedback even to children with low grades to convey the message, “If you try, you can do it.” In addition, our method allows making highly accurate scientific predictions on learning. Consequently, it is possible to construct highly accurate educational big data sets that aggregate various responses from many individuals on a yearly basis. The analysis of such data longitudinally visualizes not only learning but also consciousness states, such as feelings of self-efficacy and trends toward depression. Thus, it is now possible to conduct scientific discussions based on causal data, such as the visualization of at-risk children and practical assessments of the influence of teacher guidance.

    The purpose of this study is to develop a test item database for statistics education for psychology students. The main results of this study are : (1) we improved the design of the previous version of the database and added many new test items to it, (2) we gathered data on the usability of the database from university faculty who teach statistics to psychology majors.

    東京都のA区が取り組み始めた人格の完全を目指した品性・品格教育を、研究者で支援するのが本研究の目的である。
    本研究の3年間の目的は、(1)品性・品格教育の全国初の実践に向けて、取り組みの理念や教育的意義を、教員や保護者に向けて正確に伝えるため、教育委員会の活動を支援すること、(2)品性に関する教育の成果を、well-beingとの関係を中心にアンケートで調査し、この取り組みをエビデンス・ベースの展開にすること、(3)アメリカで教員達に品性・品格教育を教え、全米で学校を支援しているボストン大学の先生をお招きし、A区の品性・品格教育にコメントしていただき、旧来の教育と違った新しい視点を取り入れることである。本年度はまとめの年なので、(1)、(2)を中心に行った。
    (1) 地域の保護者向け講演会、校内研修会、教育委員会主催の研修会等で、交通費、講演料なしの講演を行い、全区実施に向けて教員研修等のお手伝いをした。また、教育委員会は、全学区で使用する教師用手引き書を作成したが、これを作成する際、知識提供、翻訳した資料の提供を行った。
    (2) アンケート調査は、A区が取り組みを始める前の段階から毎年、2月に調査を行っている。今回で4回目のアンケートを実施した。3回目までのまとめは、アンケートに協力してくださった学校と教育委員会にお伝えした。この分析の結果、規範意識は確かにwell-beingと関わっているが、その教育の成果の様相は内容(根気、活力、寛容など)によって多様であることが窺えた。
    (3) 昨年のボストン大学の教授による講演の逐語録をまとめ、多くの方に配布できるようにした。

    本年度は、4月に橋ヶ谷の作成した「品性」「礼節」「責任」「誠実」「自律」「根気」「寛容」のポスターをH市内の小中学校11校,H県S町内の小中学校13校に月1枚のペースで張ってもらい、校長先生にその月に張ったポスターの内容について月1回の講話をお願いした。この実践の成果を子ども達のポジティブな特性を育むことに役立つかどうかをアンケートを実践の実施前と後で分析して成果を確認することにした。他方で,東京都A区では違うキーワード(徳目)と独自のポスターを用い,月1つのペースで子ども達の規範を育む取り組みをしている。ここでは今年は3年目の調査を2月に実施した。
    質問紙は,Peterson & Seligman(2004),Snyder, et al.(1996), Boyer(1995),加藤& Snyder(2005),大竹et al.(2005),島井et al.(1995),寺崎・岸本・古賀(1992),青木&竹嶋(2007)等を参考に,小学校3年生から中学3年生までを対象として,規範意識と感情,幸福感,希望との関係を調べた。これらの調査の結果,明らかになったことは主として次の3つである。(1)規範意識の高さは,ポジティブな感情,根気強さ,希望,主観的な幸福感,生活充実感とはプラスの相関があり,ネガティブな感情とはマイナスの相関がある。(2)品格教育の実施の効果については,相関関係のあるものが増えたという点では効果があったと言えるが,規範の得点には変化はない。(3)発達的変化を見ると,小学校の中学年が一番規範意識が高く,中学生の規範が低いこと,つまり,年齢が進むとともに,数値が下がる発達をする。これらのことから,規範は単調増加的に上昇するのではなく,質が変化する,と言う形で変化することが窺えた。この中で,A区の初年度の分析結果は,ベルリンで開催されたICPで,H市,S町の調査のプレテストについては,2009年に行われたSRCDで発表した。

    In 2005, we did a pilot survey to understand the present situation about the education of psychological statistics for the humanities course students. To be concrete, we asked 15 teachers who had experiences about teaching psychological statistics.
    The contents of questionnaire were as follows : the difficulty with teaching, the ideas of teaching methods.
    In 2006, we conducted the nationwide investigations. We got the answers from 58 teachers and 872 students. The difference between teachers' thought and students' thought was clarified.
    We have developed and written the text book for psychological statistics. "R" is a free software. It can conduct many statistical analyses. We developed the introductory textbook to understanding statistics using R.
    And finally, we also made the item database for introductory psychological statistics.

    Until now, it has not been possible to scientifically measure a person's academic skills using scientific data, or, in other words, to realize objective absolute evaluations. In response, we developed a new measurement method which, unlike conventional evaluation methods that measure the effects of learning using tests only, also takes learning events into consideration. That is to say, we introduced a method of scheduling individual learning events and test events for extended periods according to each content of study, to see when and how these events occur, thereby accurately measuring a child's learning effects. This approach leads to a new educational evaluation method that is based on the new scheduling technique and which "integrates learning and tests." In our study, we applied this new approach to drill learning situations at the school setting, and fed back to individual students the effects of drill learning that cannot be perceived immediately even with studying (micro-steps). We also aimed at boosting children's motivation for learning. We conducted long-term learning experiments targeting such drill learning as studying and memorizing English words in high school, and reading Chinese characters in elementary school. Accumulation of the effects of daily learning, which are slight, was measured scientifically with extremely high precision, enabling us to illustrate the timeline changes in an individual student's learning attainment levels. Moreover, by feeding back the accumulation of such effects to individual students, we succeeded in increasing their motivation for learning. There currently are no other studies that carry out learning assistance of individually measuring the learning effects and feeding back the findings.
