Human organoids are emerging as a valuable resource to investigate human organ development and disease. The applicability of human organoids has been limited, partly due to the oversimplified architecture of the current technology, which generates single-tissue organoids that lack inter-organ structural connections. Thus, engineering organoid systems that incorporate connectivity between neighboring organs is a critical unmet challenge in an evolving organoid field. Here, we describe a protocol for the continuous patterning of hepatic, biliary and pancreatic (HBP) structures from a 3D culture of human pluripotent stem cells (PSCs). After differentiating PSCs into anterior and posterior gut spheroids, the two spheroids are fused together in one well. Subsequently, self-patterning of multi-organ (i.e., HBP) domains occurs within the boundary region of the two spheroids, even in the absence of any extrinsic factors. Long-term culture of HBP structures induces differentiation of the domains into segregated organs complete with developmentally relevant invagination and epithelial branching. This in-a-dish model of human hepato-biliary-pancreatic organogenesis provides a unique platform for studying human development, congenital disorders, drug development and therapeutic transplantation. More broadly, our approach could potentially be used to establish inter-organ connectivity models for other organ systems derived from stem cell cultures.

© Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2020. Hospital waiting time is an important issue for improving patient satisfaction. The problem is described as the necessity of shortening not only “direct waiting time” a physical quantity, but also “sensory waiting time,” so that patients spend the same amount of time without frustration and do not feel waiting times to be overlong. It is thus necessary to devise ways to reduce the subjective feeling of waiting. This study is an exploratory/preliminary study focusing on how patients wait based on the mother’s attending experience of a medical graduate who is aware of the issue of waiting time. A patient journey map and a mental model of attitudes toward waiting time in hospitals and feelings when waiting are created. It is suggested that the user experience (UX) will be improved by providing more sufficient services using the “time” and “space (place)” in the hospital.

© 2019, Springer Nature Switzerland AG. It is well known that the implementation of physical activity/exercise is extremely important in preventing diseases and maintaining and promoting physical and psychological health. Therefore, we thought to realize a communication design that integrates medical care and communication and makes people actively want to behave, or behave unconsciously, so that they will become healthy. “AD-MED” is a new academic system aiming at solving various medical problems from the viewpoint of consumers by studying “communication” that realizes Behavior Change of people by incorporating an advertising viewpoint that is easy to understand and that affects people, such as design and copywriting. As part of this, the authors carried out the “Shoes Want to Walk” tour. This is an effort to realize enjoyment in the health behavior “walking” enjoyment by applying gimmicks on the walking path and moving forward while clearing them. As a result, it was found that quizzes and mail instructions during walking induced pleasure, but that alone was insufficient, and further motivational elements were needed.
