This study aims to develop a research methodology to investigate Japanese students' use of response tokens in academic supervision sessions in English at universities. Conversations between two British tutor-Japanese student pairing were compared with conversations between two British tutor-British student pairing. For the analysis, visual data was synthesised with verbal data on timeline using a multimodal corpus. The concept of leadtime was introduced to implement the research method, which is used to describe the time distance between points where a response token is used and where a turn transition occurs. Participants' assumptions for turn-taking structure and self-expressions in listenership with reflection of their cultural values have been taken into consideration. The results indicate that L1 transfer was observed in the Japanese students' use of response tokens, such as their constant use of head nods at a particular pace. Simultaneously, the Japanese students' approximation to the listenership behaviour in the target language was also recognised. Although further research with a larger data set is required to generalise these findings, this study indicates feasibility of the multimodal corpus based approach for analysing listenership behaviours.

This study developed a virtual reality public speaking practice system for Japanese learners of English and verified its effectiveness. As virtual audience, we implemented two modes, large-group scenes and a small-group scene, and developed a function to let users practice eye contact and appropriate speaking speed experientially, and to measure the degree of nervousness, and automatically give feedback on these. High evaluations were obtained for effectiveness and usability from verification experiments.

The results of this research are threefold: deepening the understanding of ELF, explicating the reality of ELF use and attitudes towards ELF in both business and academic settings, and considering the implications for language pedagogy for enhancing English education of future global citizens. The ELF use in academic settings is explored in EMI (English-medium instruction) settings, where it is found students from various linguacultural backgrounds communicate effectively, deploying multilingual resources in their communication. The research has also explicated changes and differences in students’ attitudes towards ELF communication. The investigation into business settings has revealed business people are keenly aware of the diversity of ELF use and communication, which is made even clearer through interviews of business people in Asian business settings, where the use of ELF, the local language and the corporate language is intertwined in a complex and multilayered manner.

This research project investigated the implementation of EMI-CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning in English Medium Instruction) at tertiary education in Japan from two perspectives: a macro analysis (multilingualism and language policies) and a micro analysis (students' discursive practices in CLIL classrooms), applying corpus linguistics and discourse analysis. For the former, the study compared the CLIL implantation and its rationales behind in two sites, Kanagawa in Japan and Madrid in Spain, concluding that CLIL in Spain has been gradually implemented from primary to tertiary levels since the 1990s, adhering the EU’s multilingual policy, while in Japan, the government has encouraged EMI lectures at universities since the 2000s to improve students’ English skills for the globalised society. In the micro level, the tendency was observed that students focused more on contents in a discussion and collaborated more in CLIL classrooms.

The contribution of the current research is classfied into the following three:① the deepening of understanding of the concept of English as a lingua franca (ELF) ② detailed description and understanding of the use of ELF in actual situations and ③ heightening awareness of the use of ELF and impliacations for language pedagogy. The first has been mainly achieved by holding various workshops and publishing working papers based on them. The second has been made possible by collecting and analysing various types of data from diverse ELF users in their use of ELF and by showing how cooperatively and successfully they achieve their communicative needs. Thirdly, disseminating these results and their implications by way of conference presentations and publications has contributed to heightening the awarness of people about ELF and to furthering pedagogical implications.
