今年度は新型コロナウィルス蔓延のため、子供を対象にした実験を保育園で行うことができず、データをまとめて収集する機会に恵まれなかった。その代わり、被験者一人一人と実験を行う日程を設定し、データ収集を行ったため、研究に遅れが生じた。昨年度から今年度にかけて、少しずつデータを集め、その結果、日本語を母語とする子供は、語順の影響を受けないと予測された比較構文の解釈についても語順の影響を受けることが明らかになった。この研究は、"Word-order effects on Japanese-speaking children’s interpretation of comparatives"という論文にまとめ、近々アメリカのジャーナルに投稿する予定だ。

一方、成人を対象にした実験はオンラインでスムーズに行うことができたため、ある程度の進捗があった。日本語を母語とする成人若年層と老齢層のかき混ぜ文の文処理を調べるオンライン実験を行い、老齢層のほうが若年層より語順による影響を強く受けることを発見した。本研究は、日本語を母語とする老齢層の文処理に対する語順の影響を調べた初めての研究であり、SOV言語における文処理能力と老化の関係を明らかにする上で重要な研究である。また、人間の文処理能力の発達と衰退を今後研究していく上で、重要な第一歩となった。この研究は、「日本語の文理解における、年齢、語順および文型による影響ー韓国語を扱ったSung et al. (2017)とSung (2015)の追試ー 」という査読付き論文として、Educational Studies 64にて発表した。
日本語児の比較構文の獲得研究

度量句と形容詞の組み合わせには、解釈と表現の複雑な対応関係が通言語的に見られる。英語では"X is 10cm tall"のように形容詞tallに度量句10cmが修飾した場合は、10cmはXの絶対的な高さを表す。一方、"X is 10cm taller"の比較構文においては、10cmはXと基準の高さの差を表す。このように度量句と形容詞の組み合わせは2種類の解釈をもたらす。しかし、スペイン語では"10cm taller"に対応する表現はあるが、"10cm tall"に対応する表現はない。一方、-erのような比較を表す形態素を持たない日本語では、度量句と形容詞の唯一の組み合わせである「Xは１０ｃｍ高い」は差を表す解釈のみをもつ。このような複雑な解釈と表現の対応関係を獲得するには、子供は周囲の大人の発話をもとに、自分の母語において可能な解釈と表現の対応関係を習得しなければならない。

本研究は、子供がどのようにこの対応関係を獲得するかを明らかにするため、日本語と英語を母語とする子供の「Xは（Yより）10cm高い」/"X is 10cm taller (than Y)"のような比較構文の解釈を調べた。比較の形態素の有無にかかわらず、日本語児も英語児もこれらの構文を‘X is 10cm tall’のように絶対的に解釈した。また「Yより」/"than Y"の基準を表す句がある場合にも同様に解釈した。６歳の子供もこの比較構文を絶対的に解釈すること、また「XはYより高い」のような基本的な比較構文は正しく解釈できることから、子供は比較構文に関して大人と同じ統語的・意味的知識をもち、度量句を導入する主要部の意味的制約に従うものの、大人と異なり比較の基準をゼロにとってしまうがために ‘X is 10cm taller (than zero)’のような絶対的な解釈をしてしまうと結論づけた。
