<p>We developed and computerized a registration system for information on class suspension caused by influenza infection. By digitizing all items in Form 1, the value of information was improved. The registration system has two main functions. One is to establish registration data for NESID and the other is to use data for GIS. The registration system features not only the data registration function for NESID but also the function to support visualization for GIS. By using ArcGIS made by ESRI, a map of the school district in a Yokohama municipal elementary school was made. By using 'Yokohamappu', a map of the number of reported cases per sentinel was made. By using ArcGIS, a map information for class suspension and a chart of the number of reported cases per sentinel were obtained. The visualization of a unitary epidemic state was made possible with this map. We identified the ward where the number of reported cases per sentinel is constantly small. It was found that the information on class suspension in an area does not change with other areas. Thus, the visualization of the number of reported cases per sentinel and information on class suspension provided useful information.</p>

This paper analyzes for the spatial structure of the Tokyo Capital Area at the view of the public finance of local governments. The formation of the expenditure of the local government is considered as a index of the characteristics of the area. The items of the expenditure are classified into three categories by the type of policy receiver. In the Tokyo Capital Area, it is clearer that the formation of the expenditure is varied by the division of the business area and residential. As a result, the inner areas have more needs to expenditures for individual strata.

This paper analyzes the distribution of city centers in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. The 500m grid data of the "Establishment Census of Japan" are used for the analysis. The size of a city center is measured by the number of employees. First, "agglomeration district of city-center type" (AD) is defined by the region whose employee density is more than 1250 per 500m grid cell, and the total number of employees is more than 10000. The AD has advantages in that it makes possible to take a comparative analysis among the cities, and it also makes possible to compare specialization of concentration in the agglomeration districts of the commercial functions with that of the office functions. There existed 41 ADs in 1991 in the Tokyo Metropolitan Area. Newer ADs appeared in inner area in the metropolitan, and larger size ADs of satellite cities appeared outer suburbs. By the analysis using Gini's index and the cluster analysis,it is shown that the AD of satellite cities were equal to ADs of sub centers.

It is necessary to select the exact area of city center to analyze its characteristics. This paper pro-poses the "agglomeration district of city center-type" (AD) as an absolute reference for the city center based on employee density. As this index differs from relative references like the central business district which are used traditionally, it permits comparative analysis between cities throughout Japan. This index also makes it possible to compare commercial and office specialization in city centers. In the definition of this index, the number of employees in the city center corresponds to over 1, 250 per 500-m grid with a total of more than 10, 000. In this paper, 135 areas throughout Japan are selected for analysis, using the 500-m grid data of the Establishment Census of Japan for an area corresponding to the index.<br> In order to examine differences in the characteristics of the ADs, the following four indices were devised. First, "the ratio of commercial employees" illustrates the centricity of cities. Second, "the center agglomeration index" expresses the degree of centralization in terms of the core of employees in the AD. Third, "the ratio of agglomeration district distortion" quantifies the degree of distortion of the spatial form in the AD. Finally, "the separation ratio of office and commercial centers" quantifies the relative degree of separation of office and commercial centers. Using these indices, an attempt is made to classify the ADs based on locations and characteristics to analyze their features comparatively. The ADs in the metropolitan area can be divided into the core city type and the satellite city type, and the ADs in the local city area can also be divided into the prefectural city type and the general city type.<br> As a result, it was found that the ratio of commercial employees can express the characteristics of city centers, and that the centricity is higher with a lower ratio of commercial employees (a higher ratio of office employees). In the three metropolitan areas of Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya, the city centers are specialized in office functions, and those of satellite cities are specialized in commercial functions and are compact in geographic form. Differences in characteristics are detected between city centers in prefectural and general local cities. The ratio of office employees in the former is higher, the average employee density is higher, and the employee density is more geographically even. An attempt was also made to confirm the presence of groups of city centers with similar features using cluster analysis. From comparative time series analysis of 10-year data from 1981 to 1991, the progress of suburbanization in local cities was confirmed.

Person trip survey can be used as basic information for social district analysis, and when read from the perspective of daily rhythm based on time geography, it is within the urban space. It is possible to use it to elucidate the actual living conditions of overseas cities. The survey recorded a total of 570,000 trips targeting 117,000 people. The Greater Cairo during this period preserved the traditional lifestyle of the common people, while the "modernized" white-collar lifestyle was mixed in a polarized manner, and the urban area since the Middle Ages was greatly expanded.

Egypt is well known to be a hydrological society dependent on the Nile. As such, Egypt has emerged as a centralized society and an example of the rural urban dichotomy. The outcome of this emphasis on the rural urban divide is the neglect of the regional perspective. Indeed, studies on Egypt generally use only one regional distinction, that between Lower and Upper Egypt. Yet, the adequacy of these regional categories as socio-economic categories has not been examined. Explanations of the regional differences have been limited to political/cultural ones. This research critically examines the simplistic view of Egyptian society as a homogeneous society, especially the rural-urban dichotomy, by employing the multi-perspective view approach. The multi-perspective view signifies the multi-disciplinary combination of the analysis based on the following various kinds of data and information.
    (1) agglomerated statistical data at town (shiyakhat)/ village (qarya) level produced by Egyptian government.
    (2) micro data collected through the household surveys.
    (3) geographical information, including detailed village maps at the building level.
    (4) qualitative information such as family histories and historical manuscripts and interviews with peasants, village authorities and notables.
(2), (3) and (4) are original data and information obtained through fieldwork in 19 villages to adopt the multi-perspective view approach. Using these original data, the regional diversity was clarified from the both of macro and micro viewpoints.

In this study, was promoted collection of spatial data, diversified analysis of the data, and digitalization of maps usable for data basis in future.
The Egypt investigation group made up a base map with high accuracy by superimposing digital maps of the Statistics Bureau of Egyptian government with digitalized old maps at the early 20th Century with high precision, on which their various statistical data were accumulated. And, by showing survey data on family income at the suburbs of the greater Cairo metropolitan area, its spatial analysis was carried out by using the Geographic Information System.
As a result, there were elucidated actual conditions of the migration in Egypt at the later half of the 20th Century, regional and spatial distribution where immigrants grew, socioeconomic characteristics of the immigrants, and spatial structure at an area forming the greater Cairo metropolitan area. And, here were also clarified spatial formative history of the middle lamella apartment-houses at a residence zone of the suburbs of Cairo and principles on family construction of the residents based on its layouts. The digitalization of the old maps on whole areas of Egypt was completed, which enabled to use for future research on modern Egyptian history as a base map.
The Central Asia investigation group metrically elucidated actual condition on modification of racial consciousness, from re-analysis of the data by using the digital maps. Relationships between irrigation canal networks and landforms and its relationship with features of race distribution at the Ferghana Valley were re-examined, to find out a new knowledge based on integration of the literature history with the Geographic Information System.
The China investigation group promoted an analysis on an object of nation wide migration from various statistical data. The native place distribution of residents who lived at the suburbs of towns was clarified through surveys on their family incomes. And, a theme on expansion of nationwide poverty and wealth difference could also be analyzed on micro-scale. The spatial analysis group accumulated know-hows to bring those processing, digitalization, and so on through their works, on the basis of limited data like the old maps.
These results are thought to give a large contributions to future application of the Geographic Information System at the humanity society field, especially application of the Geographic Information System at areas with unprepared maps.
