    Abstract

Application of physical forces, ranging from ultrasound to electric fields, is recommended in various clinical practice guidelines, including those for treating cancers and bone fractures. However, the mechanistic details of such treatments are often inadequately understood, primarily due to the absence of comprehensive study models. In this study, we demonstrate that an alternating magnetic field (AMF) inherently possesses a direct anti‐cancer effect by enhancing oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) and thereby inducing metabolic reprogramming. We observed that the proliferation of human glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cells (U87 and LN229) was inhibited upon exposure to AMF within a specific narrow frequency range, including around 227 kHz. In contrast, this exposure did not affect normal human astrocytes (NHA). Additionally, in mouse models implanted with human GBM cells in the brain, daily exposure to AMF for 30 min over 21 days significantly suppressed tumor growth and prolonged overall survival. This effect was associated with heightened reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and increased manganese superoxide dismutase (MnSOD) expression. The anti‐cancer efficacy of AMF was diminished by either a mitochondrial complex IV inhibitor or a ROS scavenger. Along with these observations, there was a decrease in the extracellular acidification rate (ECAR) and an increase in the oxygen consumption rate (OCR). This suggests that AMF‐induced metabolic reprogramming occurs in GBM cells but not in normal cells. Our results suggest that AMF exposure may offer a straightforward strategy to inhibit cancer cell growth by leveraging oxidative stress through metabolic reprogramming.

We have discovered room-temperature low-field colossal magnetoresistance (CMR) in an A-site ordered NdBaMn2O6 crystal. The resistance changes more than 2 orders of magnitude at a magnetic field lower than 2 T near 300 K. When the temperature and magnetic field sweep from an insulating (metallic) phase to a metallic (insulating) phase, the insulating (metallic) conduction changes to the metallic (insulating) conduction within 1 K and 0.5 T, respectively. The CMR is ascribed to the melting of the charge and orbital ordering. The entropy change which is estimated from the B-T phase diagram is smaller than what is expected for the charge and orbital ordering. The suppression of the entropy change is attributable to the loss of the short-range ferromagnetic fluctuation of Mn spin moments, which is an important key of the high temperature and low magnetic field CMR effect.

The interfacial magnetic coupling between metallic Fe and the double-perovskite NdBaMn2O6 single crystal was investigated in the heterostructure of 4-nm Pd/10-nm Fe/NdBaMn2O6. A considerable magnetic coupling effect was observed in the temperature range coincident with the magnetic phase transition of NdBaMn2O6. When the temperature was elevated above 270 K, NdBaMn2O6 transformed from a state of antiferromagnetic fluctuating domains to a superparamagnetism-like (ferromagnetic fluctuation) state with high magnetic susceptibility. Concurrently, the interfacial magnetic coupling between the Fe layer and the NdBaMn2O6 crystal was observed, as indicated by the considerable squareness reduction and coercivity enhancement in the Fe layer. Moreover, the presence of the Fe layer changed the magnetic structure of NdBaMn2O6 from conventional 4-fold symmetry to 2-fold symmetry. These observations offer applicable insights into the mutual magnetic interaction in the heterostructures of metallic ferromagnetism/perovskite materials.

Nanoparticulate agents for magnetic drug delivery systems (DDSs) have extensive applications in targeted drug delivery, contrast imaging and therapeutics. However, no simple synthetic method for magnetic DDS agents has been developed without the need to add magnetic nanoparticles. Here, we describe the one-step fabrication of 'all-in-one' magneto-assemblies using an 'inorganic-metal-salt-free' method, involving spontaneous self-assembly of the water-insoluble prodrug mu-oxo-bis(N, N'-ethylenebis (salicylideniminato) iron) [Fe(salen)] (magnetic core) with polypyrrole (PPy)-b-polycaprolactone (PCL) smart diblock copolymers. In the system, PCL serves as a heat-responsive core scaffold, and PPy serves as an electronic core-size controller and pH-responsive shell. This core-shell nanocomposite has a high-loading capacity (similar to 90%), and the core size is tunable by incorporating albumin or gum arabic as bio-coating agents, which also provide colloidal stability, biocompatibility and thermo-stability. Fe(salen), which has intrinsic antitumor activity, also has ubiquitous magnetic properties, which are dramatically enhanced in these molecular assemblies with magnetic coupling. Moreover, these multifunctional nanoassemblies can be delivered magnetically, can serve as magnetic resonance imaging contrast agents, can generate magneto-hyperthermal effects and can enable magnetic field-triggered release of Fe(salen) molecules under acidic conditions.

We have succeeded in growing large single crystals of double-perovskite NdBaMn2O6 with the c axis aligned, and carried out a crystal structure analysis and measurements of resistivity and magnetization. A first-order metal-insulator transition at T-MI similar or equal to 290 K is accompanied by a large jump of magnetization and lattice constants. The distortion of MnO6 octahedra is consistent with a ferroic orbital order of x(2)-y(2) type, although other orbital orders cannot be completely discarded. Neel temperature T-N is determined to be 235 K, which is fairly lower than T-MI, on the basis of the onset of a large magnetic anisotropy. Another structural phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic is found at 370 K, which arises from staggered tilting of MnO6 octahedra and little affects the transport and magnetic properties.

Phase transitions in charge and orbital degrees of freedom occur successively in the A-site ordered perovskite manganite SmBaMn2O6 at T-CO1 approximate to 370 K and T-CO2 approximate to 190 K. To determine the 3d electronic state in each phase, we performed crystal structure analyses on a single-crystal sample at 150, 300, and 400 K using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The results indicate that the charge and orbital ordering on the distorted and alternately tilted MnO6 octahedra should accompany electric polarization in each MnO2 layer. The stacking of the polarized MnO2 layers along the c axis changes from a staggered configuration to a ferroic configuration at T-CO2.

We have succeeded in growth of large high-quality single crystals of SmBaMn2O6 and measured their magnetism and electrical transport properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization and resistivity exhibits anomalies at similar to 375 and similar to 200 K. The anomalies accompany hystereses and can be assigned to ordering and rearrangement transitions of charge and orbital of Mn ions, respectively. A broad peak in magnetic susceptibility at 250K observed for pulverized samples is strongly suppressed in the case of single crystal. Magnetic susceptibility for a magnetic field parallel to the a-axis shows a kink at 175 K, below which a magnetic anisotropy emerges. The result indicates an antiferromagnetic transition of the Mn spin moments below the charge and orbital rearrangement transition, disagreeing with previous studies of polycrystalline samples.

Charge and orbital ordered (COO) phases of an A-site ordered perovskite-type manganite SmBaMn2O6 have been investigated using convergent- beam electron diffraction. The space groups of the room-temperature and lowtemperature COO phases are revealed to be Pnam and P2(1)am, respectively. Based on the space groups, the COO patterns are unambiguously determined. The noncentrosymmetric space group of the low-temperature phase emerging with the re-arrangement of charge and orbitals are revealed.

We produced c-axis-oriented samples of Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.30 <= x < 0.50) by applying a uniaxial pressure to quasisingle crystals with multiple domains at a high temperature. This reduced the number of domains in the crystals, allowing better investigation of their anisotropic magnetic properties. Below the Neel temperature, the magnetization curves can be classified into three Ca concentration ranges (x = 0.3-0.33, x = 0.33-0.37, and x = 0.4-0.45). Our results indicate that the magnetic ground state strongly depends on the Ca concentration (x). For x = 0.30-0.33, the ground state presents canted antiferromagnetic long-range order, presumably coexisting with ferromagnetic spin clusters. For x = 0.33-0.37, the magnetic anisotropy undergoes steep changes near 25 K. These observations suggest the coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin clusters. Finally, for x = 0.4-0.45, our measurements suggest the presence of small ferromagnetic spin clusters superimposed on the antiferromagnetic long-range order.

The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) algorithm has been used in simulation-based designs of many optical devices, but it fails to reproduce high-Q whispering gallery modes (WGMs). On the other hand, the nonstandard (NS) FDTD algorithm can accurately compute WGMs and can be used to make simulation-based designs of WGM devices. Wavelength splitters using the coupled resonator optical waveguides (CROWs) based on WGM couplings have recently attracted attention because they are potentially ultracompact. In this paper, we design a CROW wavelength splitter using NS FDTD simulations and demonstrate high interchannel extinction ratios of over 20 dB. Copyright © 2011 Naoki Okada et al.

The conductivity and magnetoresistance of graphite thin film (GTF), fabricated by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), were investigated. Below 100 K, the conductivity was proportional to log T, and the transverse magnetoresistance (MR) was negative, whereas the longitudinal MR was small, but positive. The conductivity and magnetoresistance results are well-described by weak-localization theory, applied to a two-dimensional disordered system. The carrier dephasing length (L-epsilon), which was estimated from the transverse MR, varied as T-p (p = 0.05-0.11). This p value is an order of magnitude smaller than that of electron-electron interaction derived from Fermi liquid theory (p = 1). This small p value strongly suggests that the electronic state of GTF is different from that of typical graphite.

The growth and structure of carbon nanowalls (CNWs) on the substrate were investigated by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction. Fully-grown CNWs have a single phase of hexagonal graphite structure with relatively high degree of graphitization as the graphite powder. The preferred orientation of graphene layers is perpendicular to the substrate surface. At the initial growth state, the graphene layers are horizontally oriented. At the critical deposition time for changing the orientation, some diffraction peaks which cannot be assigned to the hexagonal graphite structure are observed. These peaks suggest the formation of a carbon allotrope which should contribute to the turning of the orientation of graphene layers. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Surface-layer magneto-optical effects of propagating and reflected light were calculated for photonic crystals of magnetic materials using a finite-difference time-domain algorithm. The magneto-optical effect of the reflected light on the photonic band-gap range strongly depended on the dielectric constant of the surface layer, although no such surface effect was observed near the first photonic band edge. When the dielectric constant of the surface layer was low, the polarization rotation angle of the reflected light increased with the frequency of the light, and reached a maximum value just below the second photonic band. This frequency dependence should be associated with the group delay time of the reflected light, and thus the large delay time just below the second photonic band should be caused by the localization mode in the surface layer. Due to the localized surface mode, the influence of the absorption of the medium on the polarization rotation angle strongly depends on the dielectric constant of the surface layer.

Measurements of magnetization, electrical resistivity, and synchrotron x-ray diffraction were performed on single crystals of Bi1-xSrxMnO3 (0.35 &lt;= x &lt;= 0.64). The resistivity and magnetization curves show a kink near 570 K and an anomaly which is accompanied by a hysteresis at 400-500 K for all samples. Synchrotron x-ray diffraction of a sample with x=0.47 indicates that the kink and the anomaly are ascribed to an orbital- and a charge-ordering phase transition, respectively. Orbital ordering becomes incommensurate above the charge-ordering transition temperature, which is not reported in other perovskite manganese oxides. Magnetization measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition near 150 K. Below 40 K, a spin-glass-like behavior is observed for 0.35 &lt;= x &lt;= 0.53. We also investigated the anisotropic properties of a single-domain crystal with x=0.47. Magnetic anisotropy below the Neel temperature implies that the Mn spin moments orient themselves along the c axis. Anisotropic electrical conduction starts appearing below 570 K, which is the orbital-ordering transition temperature. This anisotropy is enhanced below charge-ordering temperature and is approximately rho(ab)/rho(c)similar or equal to 10 at room temperature, which indicates that e(g) electrons on excess Mn3+ ions move more easily along the c axis than in the ab plane.

The electric perturbation effect to the charge-orbital ordering state has been investigated for Bi1-xSrxMnO3 (x similar to 0.5). The alignment and rotation of the charge-orbital stripes have been observed in the resistance and the polarizing microscope images at room temperature. These results indicate the possibility of electrical control of the anisotropic properties in the charge-orbital ordering state through the orbital degree of freedom. The structural phase transition of Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (x = 3/8) was investigated by means of low-temperature transmission electron microscopy. Superlattice reflection spots with a modulation wave vector q(1) = (0, 1/2, 0) appeared below 230 K, indicating formation of the d(3x2-r2)/d(3y2-r2) type of charge/orbital ordering. Below 150 K, a new series of superlattice reflection spots with a modulation wave vector q(2) = (1/4, 1/4, 1/2) appeared, suggesting an additional ordering of excess 1/8 Mn3+, necessary due to the deviation of x from 1/2, with the occupation of the d(3z2-r2) type of e(g) orbital.

We have introduced a high accuracy version of the Yee algorithm based on nonstandard finite differences for which the error is ε∼(<i>h/λ</i>)2 compared with ε∼(<i>h/λ</i>)6 for the ordinary one. This high accuracy allows the use of coarse numerical grids, which greatly reduces the computational cost. Realistic two-dimensional calculations can run on a personal computer, while three-dimensional ones can run on a fast workstation. Using this high accuracy algorithm, we developed computational models and methods to simulate optical propagation in photonic crystals, and to compute their transmission spectra, and bandgap structures. In addition, methodologies were developed to accurately represent arbitrary lattice structures on coarse grids.

Anisotropic properties of a single-domain crystal Bi1-xSrxMnO3 with x = 0: 47 were investigated. Temperature dependence of resistivity and magnetization show an anomaly which is accompanied by a hysteresis at 400-550K and a kink near 600 K. The hysteresis and the kink may be attributed to the charge order-disorder transition accompanied with orbital commensurate-incommensurate phenomenon, and to the orbital order-disorder transition, respectively. Magnetization measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition near 150 K. Below 150 K, the magnetization for a magnetic. field in the ab-plane is larger than that along the c-axis. This magnetic anisotropy indicates that the Mn spin moments direct to the c-axis. In the charge ordering phase, anisotropy of the resistivity is approximately rho(ab)/rho(c) similar or equal to 10. This indicates that e(g) electrons on excess Mn3+ ions can move more easily along the c-axis than in ab-plane. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The effect of Cr-doping on electrical and magnetic properties of high-temperature charge-ordered manganites (Bi1-xSrxMn1-yCryO3, where x = 0.25,0.3,0.4; 0 &lt;= y &lt;= 0.1) was investigated. Without Cr-doping, a charge disorder-to-order transition (T-co) and antiferromagnetic phase transition (T-N) were observed near 500 and 150 K, respectively. The charge-order phase transition broadened, but did not disappear upon Cr-doping up to y = 0.1. The antiferromagnetic phase disappeared upon 10% Cr-doping, transforming into a paramagnetic phase.. rather than into a double exchange ferromagnetic metal, in contrast to the case of Pr1-xCaxMn1-yCryO3. Negative thermopower below Tco shows that the carriers are of electron-type in the charge-ordering state of x = 0.47 and 0.48.This indicates that the hopping of eg electrons at the Mn4+ sublattice, i.e., extra Mn3+ ions, dominates the transport properties in the charge-ordering phase. Thermopower below Tco changes from negative to positive around x ∼0.35 as the eg-electron number (1-x) increases, which implies a spatial ordering of extra Mn3+ ions. The ordering of extra Mn3+ ions possibly stabilizes the 1:1 commensurate charge ordering with the wave vector of (100) with x far from the commensurate composition, x = 0.50.Thermopower is found to be significantly dependent on magnetic field. The result should be closely related to the stability of the charge ordering in a magnetic field.

We measured dielectric spectra in the charge ordering state of Pr1-xCaxMnO3 (0.30 ≤x ≤0.50),for frequencies of 100 Hz∼15 MHz. Observed dielectric spectra were analyzed using the Debye model. The effective number of electrons (n/m) is nearly temperature independent. Dissipation, γ, drastically increases with cooling. Temperature dependence is almost the same as resistivity curve. This indicates that the hopping of polarons dominate both dc- and ac-electrical transport in the charge ordering phase. Based on the small-polaron-hopping model, x-dependent activation energy is estimated, which reaches a maximum at $x \simeq 0.33$. The γ-value decreases in magnetic fields, but does not scale with magnetization.

I studied the colossal magnetoresistance effect of double-perovskite NdBaMn2O6 single crystal. We succeeded in the growth of a high-quality single crystal that exhibits the metal-insulator transition near 300 K. The colossal magnetoresistance of the crystal shows the resistance change more than 2 order of magnitude at a magnetic field lower than 2 T near 300 K. I revealed the insulator phase was charge-orbital ordering phase using synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements. The colossal magnetoresistance is caused by the charge-orbital ordering melting in a magnetic field. The neutron diffraction measurement using the single crystal showed the crystal has a layered antiferromagnetic ordering phase below 235 K. In general, the layered antiferromagnetic phase does not coexist with the charge ordering phase. The competition of these phases could be caused by the high-temperature and low field colossal magnetoresistance in this material.

I have carried out the single crystal growth of double perovskite manganites, and the measurement of the electrical and magnetic properties of these samples. In this study, I succeeded the single crystal growth of the double perovskite manganite for almost rear earths, and the observation of an anomaly of the temperature dependence of the dielectric constant at magnetic phase transition. This anomaly depend on an applied magnetic field. I think these results clearly show the strong coupling between the dielectric and the magnetic properties of the double perovskite manganite.
